2024 Tree Professionals Seminar

The seminar provides continuing education credits for professionals: ISA and AICP. Education Credits are also available for OCVN.

Andy has a long history of conservation work that includes being the Director of Science for the Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and a founding member of the Valley View Foundation. He has worked with farmers to capitalize on the conservation benefits of the farm bill, is a prescribed fire burn boss as well as a bird and prairie enthusiast. As a trained facilitator and conservation business planner, Andy hopes to win friends and influence partners as he works to protect land at home in SW Ohio.

Alistair’s Bio: He oversees the Spaces to Places along with other greenspace related duties. In addition to the Greenspace program, Alistair also manages the Environmental Services program for Keep Cincinnati Beautiful. Alistair earned a Master of Community Planning and is a graduate of the Bachelor of Urban Planning program in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. While at the University of Cincinnati, Alistair earned a certificate in Landscape Design and Urban Design. His most recent achievement is a certification in National Green Infrastructure. In the past, he has worked for both the public and private planning sectors, where he strengthened his communication, community relations, organization, design skills and wide range of knowledge related to the planning profession. Alistair continues to foster strategic community partnerships and a strong working relationship with local agencies to restore and enhance greenspace, eliminate pollution and improve the quality of life for Cincinnati’s residents.

Caroline’s Bio:Caroline connects youth and young adults ages Pre-K through 24 to stewardship opportunities in public spaces throughout Cincinnati. She leads KCB’s Tree the CRC program and helps plan and install outdoor learning spaces at Cincinnati Public Schools through the Cultivating Stewardship program. Through placemaking activities and partnerships with community organizations, she provides a hands-on approach to learning hence the title Applied Learning Coordinator. Caroline recently completed a M.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and graduated with a B.S. in biology and a minor in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. She has 6 years of experience working in environmental education, restoration, and greenspace infrastructure for the non-profit sector. When she’s not planting in Cincinnati’s public spaces, she’s planting in her own garden where she’s collected and cultivated over 50 native plant species.

Lisa will introduce the group to Nature Journaling by sharing what it is and why you might want to start one.  She will share the benefits of keeping one, show some examples and provide some ideas to help folks get started.  Lisa will also share the simple tools you’ll need.  She will provide some resources for folks to explore after the talk if they want to learn more.

Bio: Dave is experienced in river conservation, solid waste management, brownfield remediation, and the gamut of environmental laws and regulations.

Dave earned a B.S. in Biology from Marietta College, an M.S. in Forestry from the University of Maine, and a J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Dave practiced environmental law for 25 years with Cors & Bassett, LLC. and has served on the boards of several environmental organizations.

Bio:

Stephanie supports 4 western Ohio Regional Urban Foresters and provides technical and organizational assistance to communities in her 3-county region headquartered in Findlay. She is originally from central Indiana where she learned to love the outdoors. After earning her BS in Forestry with an Urban Option from Purdue University, she fine-tuned her skills with ACRT, an Ohio-based consulting firm, for 5 years. Her positions included utility forestry supervisor in Michigan for Consumers Power then as a utility work planner for AEP in Northwest Ohio and assisting with street tree inventories in several US cities. Stephanie began her career with the Ohio Division of Forestry in 1997 as a Service Forester working one-on-one with private forest landowners. A year and a half later, she transferred into the Regional Urban Forestry position where she served 19 NW Ohio counties for 25 years. She is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist, Municipal Specialist, Tree Risk Assessment Qualified, and is a Society of American Foresters Fellow.

Brian, a Cincinnati native, began his horticulture career in the 1990s at West Hill Greenhouses and studied horticulture at the University of Cincinnati. Joining Spring Grove in 1999, he became a director in 2024. Brian serves on multiple boards, including the Ohio Invasive Plants Council, American Public Gardens Association and Boone County Arboretum Plant Collection Committee. He shares his passion for plants through talks and tours at Spring Grove, engaging garden clubs, college, and grade school students.

Tom is a founding trustee of OVFF. For more than 45 years, the nonprofit has given away or helped plant over a half million trees. His conservation work includes volunteering with the Mill Creek Alliance, Cincinnati Parks and Cardinal Land Conservancy among others. He serves on the Taking Root Advisory Board.

He worked in the water and wastewater treatment industry and was involved in supervising new system construction and upgrading existing systems. These included several upgrade projects for Cincinnati Water Works

Bio:

Pat has lived in Monroe Township, Clermont County, his entire life and is an Ohio Certified Master Technician. He taught horticulture for over 10 years through Miami University’s continuing education program. Pat is the current President of Taking Root and has worked at Natorp’s Nursery for 38 years. In Natorp’s Wholesale department, he serves garden centers, landscapers, cities, and municipalities throughout the Great Lakes Region, providing plants and horticultural expertise.

Bob is a physician by day and amateur ecologist and officer of the Greater Cincinnati Wild Ones chapter by night/weekend. He is passionate about habitat restoration, particularly the role that those of us who are urban/suburban dwellers can play in ecological healing through ecoscaping of our yards.
