Girl Scouts Earn Tree Promise Patch Through Taking Root Tree Education Program

On March 21, Taking Root board members and Patrick Sanders, a volunteer from Heritage Acres, helped nine Girl Scouts from Troops 4524 and 4227 at St. Michael School in Sharonville earn their Girl Scout Tree Promise Patch.

The event began with the Girl Scout Tree Promise:

“I promise to protect and care for trees, to learn more about the natural world, and to help make the planet a healthier place.”

The Scouts learned why trees are important and how climate change is making the Earth hotter and drier. Working together, they measured the circumference and estimated the height of trees to calculate how much carbon the trees could store through carbon sequestration.

After the outdoor activities, the Scouts headed inside to learn how trees help reduce the effects of climate change and what they can do to protect trees, learn more about nature, and help create healthier communities.

To complete the Tree Promise Patch, the Scouts later helped plant trees in Taking Root’s new Miyawaki mini forest in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood on April 18.
